What is the difference between Hajj and Umrah?

Hajj is the major pilgrimage. It occurs only during specific days of the Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah, from the 8th to the 13th. Hajj is obligatory once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financially able. Hajj involves more rituals than Umrah including standing at Arafat, spending the night at Muzdalifah, staying in Mina for multiple days, and stoning the Jamarat. Hajj takes five to six days plus travel time. Umrah is the minor pilgrimage. It can be performed at any time of year. Umrah is highly recommended but not obligatory. Umrah takes two to four hours to complete. Both require entering a state of Ihram. Both include Tawaf around the Kaaba and Sai between Safa and Marwa.

Do I need a mahram to travel for Hajj or Umrah?

This depends on your school of thought and your age. Under the Hanafi, Maliki, and Hanbali schools, a woman under the age of 45 requires a mahram to travel for Hajj or Umrah. A mahram is her husband or a male relative whom she is permanently forbidden to marry such as her father, brother, son, or uncle. Under the Shafii school, a woman may travel in a trustworthy group of women without a mahram. For women over the age of 45, some scholars relax the mahram requirement. We advise you based on your specific school of thought. We can also help you find a mahram if needed. Some tour operators offer mahram for hire services where a trusted male escort accompanies women only groups. We can connect you with these operators.

How physically fit do I need to be?

Hajj and Umrah are physically demanding. During Hajj, you will walk many kilometers each day. The distance between Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah is covered on foot or by bus. The Jamarat stoning requires walking through crowded tunnels. Tawaf involves circling the Kaaba seven times. Sai involves walking between Safa and Marwa seven times. Elderly or disabled pilgrims can use wheelchairs or golf carts for a fee. We advise you to start a walking routine months before your departure. Walk 30 minutes per day. Gradually increase to 60 minutes. If you have a medical condition, consult your doctor before planning Hajj. The Saudi authorities allow sick and elderly pilgrims to appoint someone else to perform Hajj on their behalf. This is called Hajj badal.

What should I do if my tour operator is fraudulent?

Unfortunately, fraudulent tour operators exist. They take your money and disappear. Or they provide substandard services. To protect yourself, only book with licensed operators. The Hong Kong Travel Industry Council licenses tour operators. You can verify a license on their website. Read reviews from multiple sources. Google, Facebook, and Hajj forums. Ask the operator for references from past clients. Contact those references. Get everything in writing. The contract, the itinerary, the accommodation details, the transport arrangements. Pay by credit card if possible. Credit cards offer chargeback protection. If you suspect fraud, report the operator to the Hong Kong Police and the Travel Industry Council. We can help you with this process. If you lose money, there is no recourse. That is why choosing a reputable operator is so important.
